Douglas Gustafson, Co-Founder, Director of Field Development

Douglas Gustafson is an Applied co-founder and the Director of Field Development. He is responsible for treatment site activities and field evaluation of all new Applied products. Mr. Gustafson served for over 25 years in a variety of operations, research, construction, and maintenance management positions with the Dow Chemical Company. He is recognized for his extensive experience in design, construction, start-up and operation of complex chemical manufacturing facilities in the chemical production and power generation industries.
Gustafson has a unique ability to quickly and profitably execute complex operations. While at Dow, Mr. Gustafson took a new fumigant product from laboratory experimentation to full scale production in a manufacturing plant within two years. After 20 years, the plant is still operating and produces the world's supply of this chemical with sales of over $50 million per year.
In another project, Gustafson required just 100 days to complete a $2.5 million waste treatment plant, enabling a $45 million sales order for the company. As a manager, he led a large R&D market development facility with 40 to 75 operators and annual sales of $60 million. In the power generation field, Gustafson managed and operated a 70-megawatt co-generation power plant. An energy conservation project at the co-generation plant initiated a mile long high-pressure steam line between neighboring plants resulting in a 150% return on investment.
Gustafson has proven equally adept in the laboratory as in the field. He holds three patents covering catalytic reaction, reactor design and azeotropic distillation as well as the distinction of having developed a membrane air separation product that reduced membrane warranty costs 95% in one year.
A California-licensed Professional Engineer and certified Level 4 Water Treatment Plant Operator, Mr. Gustafson received his BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington.
